Price is for 1 each of four types of pencils.Safely and Quickly removes dirt and debris from coins! The Magic Cleaning Pencil Set This set of 4 pencils is a compilation of useful tools that will run circles around all other cleaning methods! Typical methods of cleaning coins suffer from many side effects from being too strong and removing the patina and damaging the coins (electrolysis, which I only suggest for the absolutely hopeless encrusted blobs) to being too weak to be of effect (Distilled water soaking and Olive Oil soaking). Others are effective, like mechanical cleaning, but can be very dangerous if you aren't extremely careful. Still others are effective but involve toxic and dangerous chemicals (lye and other caustic chemicals). If you've been searching for a way to clean your coins quickly without destroying the patina and without having to soak them AT ALL, and to do so safely and quickly EVEN WITH UNSKILLED HANDS, you've found what you're looking for. With each kit, you will get 1 Original Magic Cleaning Pencil, 1 Fine Magic Cleaning Pencil, 1 Brush Cleaning Pencil, and 1 Brass Scalpel. General usage and sharpening instructions of the pencils is described with each one below, and should be followed to extend the life of your pencils. I want it to be perfectly clear before you buy that due to the delicate way that these pencils are manufactured, the useful portion (the 'lead') of the Original and the Fine Pencils only extends about 1/5 of the way down the shaft (approximately where the letters begin on the pencil is where the filling ends). The useful portion of the Brush pencil extends a bit further, approximately 1/4 of the way from both ends. With proper sharpening techniques and careful use, these pencils can last through many cleanings. I just don't want anyone to be shocked when the pencil runs out much sooner than anticipated. As with all cleaning methods, it is recommended that you practice on culls/junk before using it on good coins. Each of these pencils was designed with a purpose. Below I will described their general use: The Original Magic Cleaning Pencil This is the 'go-to' 'general purpose' pencil of the set. With this pencil, you can clean major devices and clean large areas of the surface. While it is best to always use tools in circular motions, you can safely use a back and forth motion with this. Except for very soft patinas, you can press quite hard with this without going through the patina, which can be quite useful when moving large pieces of dirt or flecking clay sheets off of the coin. In general, it will also leave silvering intact (but I recommend the 'Brush' pencil for those). A great feature to the material of this pencil is that it will break away before causing any significant damage. An added bonus of it, you can clean silver coins with it! As long as you do not press excessively hard, you can clean away most debris from even silver coins! DO NOT attempt to use this on very hard encrustations as it will break (I recommend using the Scalpel for that, or better yet, use one of our Diamond Pins (sold separately)). A note on sharpening: Use the large hole of a pencil sharpener to remove the wood portion. Then, use the sand-paper to refine the tip. I recommend placing the tip flat on the sandpaper and pulling the pencil towards you WHILE turning the pencil in a circular motion (you should practice this. You can do so using a normal household #2 pencil). It is best to continuously refine the tip rather than letting it get too dull The Fine Magic Cleaning Pencil Like the original pencil, this is also a general purpose pencil. However, this pencil is thinner and slightly pointier. Using this pencil, you can get into the fine detail of the coin, and again you can safely use a back and forth motion with this one without much risk of damage. The key to using this one is to keep it sharp using sand-paper (which is included in the kit). If you plan on doing a LOT of fine detail work (or extremely fine detail work) I recommend buying the Fine Diamond Pin & Vice (sold separately). A note on sharpening: Use the small hole a pencil sharpener to remove the wood portion. Then, use the sand-paper to refine the tip. I recommend placing the tip flat on the sandpaper and pulling the pencil towards you WHILE turning the pencil in a circular motion (you should practice this. You can do so using a normal household #2 pencil). It is best to continuously refine the tip rather than letting it get too dull The Brush Magic Cleaning Pencil This is my personal favorite pencil of the set. Have you ever use a brass brush on your coins and found the results to be a bit too 'shinny' and parts of the patina missing? This can do the same work as a brass brush, without these issues, and do a better job! With small circular motions, one can remove large amounts of dirt from a coin with ease. This is also the best surface improvement tool I have ever seen. If you've ever been frustrated with fine dirt deposits on your coin that will not go away with regular brushing and soaking, you'll now gleefully remove it. This brush is quite sensitive to the patina, though with too much rubbing it can move some patina from the high points of your coin. One of the most spectacular features of this brush is that you can safely remove that sandy dirt from your silvered ancient coins and it will leave the silvering! You can even improve the appearance of toned silver with VERY gentle application of this brush! Unlike other brushes though, this brush will be 'used up' during normal cleaning. If you've ever used a fiber-glass pen, you'll know what I mean. However, this pencil is MUCH more effective and you won't have to worry about tiny pieces of glass getting embedded in your skin (OUCH!). I do still recommend using a damp paper towel with this for easy clean up. It is also recommended to not inhale the dust that comes from the coin when cleaning with this (the particles get so fine they become air-born). I recommend buffing the coin with a micro-fiber cloth or other soft towel after cleaning to remove all dirt and improve the appearance of the coin. A note on sharpening- use the large hole a pencil sharpener to remove the wood. Only remove enough to expose the fibers all the way around. If part of the wood is longer after turning in the sharpener, simply turn that portion in the sharpener to remove it (without turning the rest). Do NOT use sandpaper on this one. The Magic Scalpel Cleaning Pencil Brass is a softer metal than bronze/copper. This is the reasoning behind the use of brass in most cleaning tools as it theoretically won't damage the coin itself. With that being said, it WILL damage patina in many cases. This scalpel should be used to remove only hard encrustation from the coin, and should only be used when you are CERTAIN of what you are doing. It should never be used on silver of any kind as it WILL damage the coin. This tool is quite useful when used carefully (I recommend using magnification). It does not need to be sharpened, and you should not attempt to do so. It may become distorted through normal use, in which case you'll need to purchase a new one. THIS LISTING DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY SHARPENING UTENSILS Real Examples of Coins Cleaned Using The Magic Pencils! Note that the silvering is still intact! This was cleaned using mostly the Brush pencil, but harder deposits were removed using the Original pencil. Note the entire patina is safely preserved! This coin was cleaned in a matter of 15 minutes using the Original, Fine and Brush Pencils! A small part on the cheek of Constantinople was extra hard, so I used the scalpel pencil to safely remove it! A beautiful coin! A large Republican coin with fine clay deposits. A nightmare to safely remove AND have a nice result using other methods. The Brush pencil and original pencil made short work of it! Fantastic results on silver! Clear improvements on both the Gordian III Denarius and the Volusian Antoninianus. All that was used was the fine pencil to remove the red encrustations and then the brush pencil to remove all of the ugly discoloration. One can achieve even more profound results with further careful work by picking the more stubborn encrustations with the diamond pin (sold separately). These pencils are sold as-is with the only warranty being that the pencil will be roughly as pictured (the wood color varies by shades of brown) and will be of good quality. They are manufactured to the HIGHEST degree of quality. With that being said, through normal use, they will wear out and will need to be replaced (and you can obtain them here). Giving you an estimate as to the lifespan of the pencils is not possible due to varying frequency and intensity of use, but you can expect to clean many coins without needing to replace it. The useful portion of the Original & Fine Pencil (the center filling) DOES NOT go all the way through. In fact, it only goes about 1/5 of the way down the shaft of the pencil. The useful portion of the Brush pencil is about 1/4 of the way down the shaft from both ends. With that being said, with proper sharpening techniques and careful use, they should still last a while. The brass scalpel pencil should last longer, while the others will need to be replaced sooner. Lighter cleaning jobs will make your pencils last longer, as will proper sharpening procedures. They conquered much of their known world and many powerful enemies in the process. At the height of their power, it seemed as though they were unstoppable and that their power would last for eternity. It comes as no surprise then, that eventually they would place the legends ROMAE AETERNAE on their coinage. These legends translate into "Eternal Rome" and these coins usually depict the Roman city goddess Roma with a Spear and a victory in her hand as well as a shield beside or beneath her. These icons were symbols of Roma's might. The spear represented the strength of the Roman army and the phalanx. The shield also representing this might, but also giving a sense that under Roman rule, one was safe. The victory of course representing its namesake in the victories over Rome's enemies. It is clear that the Romans thought their empire would last for eternity. Of course we today know that the Roman empire did not last for eternity, and that what remains is only a small shadow of its former glory. All is not lost, however. The coins they minted have preserved a snapshot of their memory. These coins bare the mark of their creators and reflect their lives, customs, and history in images and denominations. By preserving and collecting these coins, we are keeping their memory alive. Romae Aeternae Numismatics offers this history at prices affordable to most everyone. You too can own a piece of this history and memory of the Eternal Roman Empire! Here at Romae Aeternae Numismatics, we have chosen to include the depiction of Roma on our logo and seal of authenticity because we believe it represents Rome's most meaningful piece of Numismatic history. It represents her national pride, her traditions, her power, might, and her prestige! A certificate of Authenticity (signed by our professional numismatist) is included with the purchase of all coins! I hope you find something that meets your interests!
